We started with a roleplay. A healthy nulliparous woman is referred for pre-pregnancy counselling. Her brother has cystic fibrosis. This is a classic station and it took well over an hour to work our way through it. It demonstrates the need for loads of practice in dealing with explaining things like inherited disease. You also need to be able to work out risk. This is dealt with in MCQ paper 2: http://www.drcog-mrcog.info/MCQ%20P2,%20q1.htm. The one thing we did not discuss is that screening for CF is limited by the huge number of mutations and the fact that no test screens for them all. So there could be a mark for explaining the limitations of testing.
Then we discussed diathermy. Before listening to that part of the tutorial, you would probably do best is you read through my explanation on the website: http://www.drcog-mrcog.info/Topics%20not%20in%20the%20textbooks.htm.
